The sky is blue because of the scattering of the light from the sun when it enters our atmosphere. The longer wavelengths of lower frequencies are able to pass directly through our atmosphere easier. The shorter wavelengths are wither absorbed or completely reflected. The absorbed light in turn is soon released, but from the atmosphere itself rather than directly from the sun. This also applies to how the color changes as the sun sets.
